Following are some excerpts from messages from Dijana, who was here in Wellington for the International Women's Performance Festival (Magdalena Aotearoa) and who has now returned to Belgrade.

Friday, 9 April 1999

... We had safe trip here, night after we had passed, the bridge near Belgrade that we crossed, was destroyed! I feel better to be with my dear ones. Apart of that here is real hell. Every night the town is in flames, fear is huge, there are dead and wounded people although medias on both sides deny this. Millions of people are in shelter, humid and cold. They will produce just more suffering with all of this. I do not know how long we shall have electricity, food, etc. So, lets be in touch as long as we can.

Mon 12 April 1999

... Unfortunately, I do not have anything nice to write you about situation here. It is scary and ugly and it seems that it will never stop. We live in constant pain and fear. Western media do not speak about what is really happening here. They are just demonising Serbs, without mentioning all crimes they did here. Millions of people are in shelters, there are dead and wounded civilians, country is already destroyed and they continue to destroy it, centre of Belgrade was also bombarded, many smaller towns in Serbia are destroyed, not to speak of Kosovo. Albanian and Serbian refugees are
trying to escape also from bombs anywhere. It is very clear now that America does not care for people at all, they care only for position at Balkan no matter what it costs. And Europe, as always in History, greedy and stupid , will allow third time in this century war on its territory. Many western European countries do not have death penalty but they do drop bombs on the heads of the people of Yugoslavia. From this perspective New Zealand looks like paradise and I deeply regret that I can not be with my dearest ones there. But reality is different. I am sorry to write you in such a dark way, but also I think that it is important to know truth, because we live in global manipulation and control of all medias.

... I try not to think about tomorrow, because I would gone mad. I try to survive from day to day.
