Food Not Bombs is an international movement that protests against war and poverty by providing free vegetarian food to people in need, and in support of those involved in political activism.

There is enough food in the world to feed everyone. But 7 million ordinary people in Afghanistan face starvation ­ food and supplies cannot reach them because of the war that is going on. Here in Aotearoa there are people living in poverty. By recycling food that would otherwise go to waste, Food Not Bombs highlights the failure of society to meet people’s basic needs, while at the same time billions of dollars are poured into the forces of war and violence.

Albert Einstein, who was a human rights activist, said that the world is not a dangerous place because of the few who do harm, but because of the millions who stand by and let them. Justice is something that we all need to take part in. We can’t leave it in the hands of the police, the government, social workers, or religion. Justice is something we must all create in our own lives and communities.

Food not bombs believes in a society based on love and sharing, not on greed and violence. By giving out free vegetarian food, we respond to the injustice in the world, by living out our commitment to non-violent social change.
